"Soldier's Heart" and Autobiographies

Homework/Classwork Assistance
Students have various times to work on assignments or receive help at school: sometimes during class, during morning resource (M/W/F 8:30-9:00am), or after school - if arranged with Ms. Barnes. We welcome Ms. Wyatt as our UO student teacher for 4th period.

HS Planning
Counselors from Sheldon High School will be at Monroe Tuesday, April 26th to help 8th graders complete course selection forms for next year.

Reading
All of Ms. Barnes' students checked out a copy of A Soldier's Heart from the school library today. We are continuing to read approximately one chapter per day.

Reading Schedule
Read Ch. 5 on Monday, April 25th
Read Ch. 6 on Tuesday, April 26th
Read Ch. 7 on Wednesday, April 27th
Read Ch. 8 on Thursday, April 28th

Writing
We've started a draft of our 5-paragraph autobiographies. Most of the writing will be done in class, but if behind, you should continue writing at home. Skip lines, keep your copy in your binder, and bring to class everyday.

Paragraph 1: (last week) intro paragraph - state thesis w/a "hook"
Paragraph 2: (last week) 1st body paragraph - describe your past w/an anecdote
Paragraph 3: (this week) 2nd body paragraph - describe your current life w/one memorable middle school event
Paragraph 4: (this week) 2nd body paragraph - describe your future w/plans, goals, hopes
Paragraph 5: (next week) conclusion paragraph - summary of highlights, conclude w/quotation or your personal "motto"

"Soldier's Heart" and Autobiographies

Reading
We read Flowers for Algernon last week and today we held a discussion about its topic, artificially enhanced human intelligence.

All of Ms. Barnes' students checked out a copy of A Soldier's Heart from the school library today. We had an introduction to the Civil War setting via "accessing prior knowledge," "building new knowledge," and a discussion of the intro to Chapter 1, the entirety of which is to be read by Wed., April 20th. We will be reading approximately one chapter per day.
