Classwork/Homework

Please attend M/W/F morning resource if you need writing assistance or if you have incomplete work to finish.

Reading/Writing

Book reports are now past due. Students MUST come in to resource M/W/F or make arrangements to meet with Ms. Barnes before school, during lunch, or after school to complete the assignment. 

Mon - There will be whole class work on context clues and a related worksheet/homework (yellow) will be due Wednesday.

Types of Context Clues:
replacement/synonyms
contrast/antonyms
common signal words
definition/description
cause and effect
items in a series

Tue/Wed - Students will read "The Landlady" by Roald Dahl (textbook p.72) and use a note sheet to list word, clues, guess, and definition. They are expected to complete a worksheet in class on foreshadowing (cream).

Thu/Fri - Students will read "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs (textbook p. 85). Concepts covered in class will be plot, context clues, visualization. Analysis will be done via a powerful paragraph which students will write in class Thursday and Friday.

Reading/Writing
  • More denotation and connotation work 
  • Introduction of book report requirements (yellow handout);
    in class time to write 1st paragraph (intro)
  • Setting focus: read "In Trouble" (textbook p. 251-258) in class. Answer questions from "Reading Check" (p.259) completely and thoughtfully, writing multiple sentences for each answer. This is to be turned in Monday, October 15th. Students can access the textbook online form home via their teacher-provided login and password, or attend Monday morning resources (8:30-9am) to finish their work.
Continue reading your choice novels. Book reports are due OCT 23. Plan to finish reading your book approximately one week in advance, in order to have enough time to write the assigned report.
